You may be wondering, what is it? The Welcome Here Project is a support system and a safe place for the LGBTIQ+ community throughout Australia that promotes diversity and a welcoming environment for each member of the community.
It's the new "Safe Place Project." (Welcome Here)
The project is an initiative of ACON - a health organisation based in New South Wales, creating opportunities for the LGBTIQ+ communities to live their best and healthiest lives.
ACON started the Welcome Here Project in 1992 when there was a huge outbreak of street-based violence that targeted the LGBTIQ+ communities.
Who are the members of the LGBTIQ+ community?
The LGBTIQ+ community stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer. Making up around 11% of the entire Australian population, they're considered to be the priority for suicide in the country as a result of discrimination, harassment, prejudice, and abuse.
When ACON started the Welcome Here Project, they wanted it to be a beacon of hope for all the members of the LGBTIQ+ community. Local businesses and establishments who signed up to become a 'Safe Place' member receive a sticker and are encouraged to display it in a public area, or online. This lets everyone know that that particular business welcomes and celebrates the LGBTIQ+ community.
Criteria for joining the Welcome Here project
If you want to become a member of the project, you need to commit to support these three:
- Welcome and celebrate the LGBTIQ+ community
- Create positive change in your local community
- Celebrate Diversity Days
How to register your business as a member?
You can apply to become a member by going to the Welcome Here website and fill out the registration form.
